For a Scrum Master, ‘Coaching‘ is not the most exposed role (or ‘stance‘ as Barry Overeem talked about) in the current literature. So I would like to share a very interesting article: Scrum Master is the Master of Coaching written by Joshua Partogi. If you feel this is TLTR (Too Long To Read), here are the main insights.

The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

Coaching is not counseling = this is not about listening to make the client feel better about their own life, neither fixing one’s mental health.

Coaching is not consulting = this is not about providing a solution to the client.

Coaching is not a buddy talk = this is not about having a nice conversation like with good friends because it would prevent from having unbiaised and objective discussion.

A coach knows when to put tension (asking thought-provoking questions) so that people think differently and commit to an actionable item.

A coach gets actionable outcome at the end of the coaching session.

A coach is focused on the (coaching) process, not on the content.
